Top Fly Tying Videos & Patterns for Practicing the Fundamentals

We may be staring down the barrel of another cold winter here in Colorado – but that won’t keep us off the water. We are fortunate to have excellent year-round fly fishing on our local tailwaters. And even when we’re not out there with fly rods in hand, you’ll often find us tying flies this time of year, restocking our depleted fly boxes.

As we turn more of our attention to tying flies, we thought it would be helpful to highlight some of the fly tying fundamentals that always need practice. No matter where you are in your fly tying journey, honing your skills on the basics is a great way to improve the rest of your fly tying game. We’ve selected a handful of our top fly tying videos that offer great tips on these core elements – things like fly proportions, being economical with your thread wraps, tips for using dubbing, and other common materials.

As it so happens, some of the best flies for practicing these fundamentals are tailwater nymph patterns. Not only will they help you hone your fly tying skills; they’re also flies you can fish with confidence over the next few months and then throughout the year.

Here are some of our top fly tying videos for practicing the fundamentals – and for fishing over the coming winter months:
