Shopping for someone who loves to tie flies this holiday season? Someone who is learning to tie flies? Or maybe you’ll leave yourself a little something under the tree! Either way, we’ve got some great ideas for fly tying gifts.
The Anglers All crew knows a thing or two about fly tying. In fact, we now have three Umpqua Signature Tyers on our staff! We are excited to announce that our own Delaney Chapman is the newest addition to the elite community of Umpqua Signature Tyers. Congratulations, Delaney!
With so many knowledgeable fly tyers here in the shop, we are here to help with any of your fly tying questions. Whether you need help with materials, tools or a certain technique, please don’t hesitate to ask.
You might also want to check out our new fly tying video catalog. We’ve assembled all of our fly tying videos into one place where they are easy to find – organized by category and alphabetically. Check out the catalog for all the videos we’ve created over the years.
Another resource to consider, our fly tying classes! We teach a unique program in both 101 and 201 level courses held here at the Littleton Fly Shop for 3 hours each on consecutive Saturdays. This shorter class, 2 weeks in a row is great for beginners and gives you time to practice in between. While our classes are filling up quickly, check our class dates here!
Our Staff Picks for Fly Tying Gifts:
Ben: Tiemco Adjustable Double Arm Bobbin
Ben told us that he enjoys tying with these bobbins from Tiemco. The double-arm design provides a more substantial grip than a standard bobbin. And the thread tube is adjustable vertically, making it adaptable for tight detailed wraps, or larger looping wraps on bigger flies.
Jimmy: Half Hitch Tools
When you are tying nymphs with a bead, a half hitch tool allows you to easily slip the half hitch over the bead and get it locked in. Jimmy suggested that this would be a helpful addition to any fly tyers kit. This tool pictured here is a new one from Hareline, and includes a bodkin and brush.
Jeff: Loon Core Fly Tying Kit
Jeff says this would make an outstanding gift for a new or aspiring fly tyer. The Loon Core Tying Kit strikes a nice balance between quality and value. The tools are nice and simple and feel good in hand.
Daryl: Hareline Cautery Tool
Daryl uses this fine-tipped cautery tool as a finishing tool to clean up flies. It allows the tyer to easily and quickly trim thread tag ends, clean up bucktail and clear hook eyes.
Delaney: Stonfo Comb / Brush
Delaney says this simple two-sided tool is useful for tying all sorts of flies. He uses the comb to work through deer hair, flash and marabou. Then he uses the brush side for teasing out dubbing and fluffing up palmered materials on smaller bugs.
Johnnie: Dr. Slick Synthetics Scissor
Johnnie suggested the Dr. Slick Synthetics Scissor because it’s great for cutting flashabou and other synthetic materials. He says that cutting materials like lateral scale, craft fur, EP fibers, and tinsel, can really dull a pair of all-around tying scissors. If you tie with synthetic materials frequently, this would be a great addition to your fly tying kit.
