In this video, Anglers All fly tying expert and Umpqua Signature Tyer, Ben Baxter, shows us how to tie the Smoke Jumper from start to finish.
The Smoke Jumper is one of those ideal fly patterns that’s extremely versatile, it’s relatively quick and easy to tie, and it includes just a few simple materials that are easily substituted for whatever you have on hand.
While it’s most often tied to imitate a blue winged olive emerger, the basic recipe can easily be adapted using different colors and materials to suit a wide range of emergers, whenever and wherever you find yourself fishing.
One of the things we love about this fly is the way it rides low in the surface film. While the CDC wing remains buoyant on the surface, the rest of the fly hangs down into the water, creating a realistic emerger or cripple imitation. You can fish this fly on a double-dry fly rig behind an adult mayfly pattern, letting it dangle in the surface film. Or, fish it as part of a nymph rig below the surface.
