Our Top Fishing Destinations in Patagonia and How to Prepare

Why would you fly across hemispheres to catch a trout? It’s a valid question. But it’s an easy one to answer. Here’s why we love fly fishing in Patagonia, a couple of our favorite destinations, and a quick video on how to pack and prepare for your trip…

Why Fly Fish in Patagonia?

What Alaska is to the Northern Hemisphere, Patagonia is to the Southern Hemisphere. The windswept region of Patagonia is a last frontier in its own right. As you leave the metropolitan centers of Santiago or Buenos Aires and head south, it can feel like you’re heading towards the ends of the earth – because you are. From the jagged peaks and glaciers of the Andes to the open grassland steppes, Patagonia is a place that if you’re not careful, will easily get into your blood.

If you’ve ever watched a gaucho on horseback, seen a condor take off from a rocky point, or watched a trout rise in an impossibly-blue, glacier-fed lake or river, you know exactly what we’re talking about. And if you haven’t yet – put it on your bucket list!

Our Favorite Destinations in Patagonia

Here at Anglers All, we’ve been enjoying annual trips to fly fish in Patagonia for ten years. The scenery, the food, the fishing and the people, all keep drawing us back.

Three of our favorite fly fishing destinations in Patagonia:

Cinco Rios – One thing we love about Cinco Rios is the diversity of water. In a week of fishing, you could see big coastal rivers, glacial lakes, small mountain streams, and spring creeks. To top it off, a beautifully appointed lodge, great food, amenities, and staff, make this an ideal adventure. Additionally, there are non-angling activities like horseback riding, bird watching, or a relaxing massage and R&R at the lodge, making your stay highly customizable.

SET Fly Fishing – SET Fly Fishing has programs across Argentina ranging from trout to Golden Dorado. Their operations in northern Patagonia are known for having some of the best dry fly fishing in the world. Five of the region's most famous rivers, spring creeks, and mountain lakes are a short drive from the lodge. For something truly off the beaten path, SET offers a helicopter fishing program to remote and untouched waters.

Rio Manso – Rio Manso also boats a variety of fishing with big rivers, small creeks, remote waters, and flats-style lake fishing. But the big attraction is the dragon fly hatch! In addition to big fish and big dry flies, the scenery and non-angling activities make this a well-rounded destination. Nearby Bariloche might be one of the most beautiful towns on earth. Imagine Lake Tahoe, meets Switzerland, meets Argentina, and you’re somewhere in the ballpark.
