Alaska The Way You Imagined, Fishing with Aniak River Lodge

When it comes to fly fishing dream trips, Alaska tops the list for many anglers. We think of big rainbows, eating mouse patterns and putting up acrobatic fights. Big salmon runs. Colorful arctic char and Dolly Varden. Aggressive eats from trophy sized pike. Or iconic arctic species, like grayling and sheefish. Those dreams are reality at Aniak River Lodge.

One of the reasons we love Aniak River Lodge, is its ideal location in western Alaska. It’s remote and secluded. It’s home to all those species that make Alaska a dream destination. And yes, the rainbows here really do eat mice!

Check out this video, aptly titled “Mighty Mouse”

Aniak River Lodge with its perfect combination of tributaries, log jams and un-pressured rainbow trout, make for an incredible mouse fishing adventure. While you can catch their resident leopard rainbow trout every week of the season on mouse patterns, June through August offer the best opportunity. If you have dreamed of aggressive splashy eats on mouse patterns, this is your spot!

As Ben Kinne recaps his trip from last year, “swinging waking mouse for big rainbows is only a small part of the Aniak River Lodge fishing experience. You will have the opportunity to target 12 different species of fish depending on the time of year. While we were there we caught 7 species of fish which included rainbow trout, greyling, dolly varden, chum salmon, king salmon, pike, and sheefish. It scratches the itch for every type of angler and every type of fishing. A majority of your fishing is throwing mice or streamers to eager and aggressive fish that will often chase down and hammer your fly. Leave your 4x and 5x at home because these fish are not shy and you will need stouter gear to get these fish to the net”.

He continues his story here: “some of the best parts of a trip to Aniak River Lodge is the diversity of fish species that you can catch, and the diversity of water you fish. 6 full days of fishing does not come close to showing you the amount of water that is available to the guides. You will fish backwater sloughs for pike, the main Aniak River for sheefish and trout, and never ending amounts of channels and tributaries for all other fish species. It truly is a fly fishers paradise”.
