In this video, local guide and Umpqua Signature Tyer, Jason Braun, walks us through the process of tying his Martian May from start to finish.
Jason developed the Martian May while guiding clients in low-light conditions, when some of the smallest mayfly hatches tend to come off the water. These tiny bugs can easily get as small as a size 22 or 24. In these conditions, Jason felt the need for a small mayfly pattern with enhanced visibility.
While euro nymphing, Jason noticed just how visible his sighter material was while the sun was going down. With that in mind, he integrated the fluorescent glowing red color found in Amnesia leader material into his small dry fly, and the Martian May was born.
Whether you’re fishing tricos, or any other small mayfly hatch, the fluorescent monofilament creates a highly visible fly. What’s more, this post material has a smaller diameter than a traditional post. This allows for upsized hackle, creating more buoyancy and a more consistently soft, upright landing on the water for delicate presentations to picky trout.
