New Videos: Two Practical Uses for the Perfection Loop Knot

The perfection loop is one of those knots that should be in every angler’s toolkit. It’s very useful and it’s easy to tie. In the following videos, we’ll show you two ways to use the perfection loop.

First, the perfection loop is the perfect knot to tie on the butt end of your leaders to create an easy loop-to-loop connection with your fly line. While packaged leaders come with a pre-tied loop, this is a very useful knot to know. Being able to tie a quick perfection loop gives you the ability to make your own leaders or to re-tie a new loop. We like building our own leaders when streamer fishing, or anytime we need a leader that falls outside of the standard 7.5-foot or 9-foot tapered variety. Other situations when we might build our own leaders include saltwater trips, for warmwater species like bass here on the Front Range, or when carp fishing in the Denver South Platte.

Second, the perfection loop can be used to tie on flies at the end of your leader. When tying on certain flies, a loop knot has advantages over the traditional clinch knot. When fishing streamers for example, a loop gives the fly more range of motion and movement in the water. Especially when you’re fishing big flies, the heavy leader tied in a clinch knot will create a stiff connection to the fly – whereas the loop knot allows the fly to move much more realistically.
