Fly Tying Video: Flash Bang Midge

Fly Tying Video: Flash Bang Midge

In this fly tying video, one of our in-house tying experts Ben Baxter shows us how to tie the Flash Bang Midge. Devan Ence originally developed this Solitude Fly Company pattern. The Flash Bang Midge is a great looking midge emerger that fishes well on technical tailwaters or anywhere you find midge hatches.

There are a few things we love about the Flash Bang Midge. First off, it’s a lightweight pattern, making it versatile in a variety of scenarios. It’s effective when fished high in the water column whenever trout are targeting emergers. Or, it can be fished as a part of a weighted nymph rig.

The Flash Bang Midge has a great appearance in the water, with just enough flash to grab some attention. The micro tubing body lends it a segmented, buggy look and the glass bead imitates the gas bubble of an emerging midge. This is all achieved with a relatively simple list of fly tying materials. Swap colors or change up the bead to match the hatch on your home water.
