Fly Tying Video: Egan’s Headstand with Daryl Eakins

In this fly tying video, Anglers All crewmember and carp fishing buff Daryl Eakins shows us how to tie an extremely effective carp pattern, Egan’s Headstand.

Whenever and wherever you find yourself sight fishing to carp, the Headstand from Umpqua Feather Merchants is an absolute must-have pattern. Developed by Lance Egan, the Bead chain eyes give it a buggy look. But even more importantly, they allow the fly to ride hook up and avoid being snagged on the bottom.

Like many carp patterns, the Headstand may not imitate anything very specific. Tied in rusty colors, it’s a great crayfish imitation. But whether it’s a leech or just a buggy attractor, this is a fly that should earn a place in every carp angler’s box.

HOOK: Tiemco 2457 (6 - 8)

THREAD 1: 6/0 UNI-Thread (Tan)

THREAD 2: 50 Denier GSP (White)

EYES: Bead Chain Eyes (Medium | Silver)

TAIL: Rabbit Strips (Rust)

BODY: Antron Dubbing (Rust)

HACKLE: Rooster Hackle (Rust or Ginger)

HEAD: Antron Dubbing (Fl. Orange)

GLUE 1: Loon Water-Based Head Cement

GLUE 2: Zap-A-Gap
