Fly Tying Video: Clear Wing Trico Spinner from Umpqua

In this fly tying video, Ben Baxter walks us through tying the Clear Wing Trico Spinner, a great little dry fly pattern from Umpqua Feather Merchants.

Tricos are small mayflies that hatch throughout the summer and fall. Although they are small, big numbers make them an important food source for trout. After the adults lay their eggs on the water, they die. These dead spinners fall to the surface of the water where trout take advantage of an easy meal.

Fishing these dead mayflies requires a perfectly drag-free drift, something that’s not always easy to do with such a small pattern. On the other hand, a trico spinner fall brings so much food to the surface, trout have a tendency to get tunnel vision, rising constantly to gobble up the buffet line of bugs. So with very fine tippet and a good presentation, it can be very fun dry fly fishing.

Easily one of our favorite trico patterns, the Clear Wing Spinner features a realistic slim profile and split tail, along with a foam post to help with floatation and visibility.
