The water has finally come down on the Yampa and the wade fishing is better than ever. Lots of big fish are being caught throughout the town of Steamboat and many of the fish are rising consistently to Mahogany mayflies, Pale Morning Dun's, Yellow Sallies, Green Drake's, and the caddis hatch is really starting to take off in the evenings. Right now is a great time to walk the banks in search of large rising fish, however, the fish are selective as to what bug they are eating, so make sure to stock your fly box with a variety of patterns!
Many of the rising fish are holding tight to the banks, so be stealthy as you work your way up stream!
A 9' 4-5 rod has you covered for the bulk of the trout fishing in this valley, a 9' 6 is ideal for casting large streamers when float fishing. Be sure to bring several 9' 4x leaders and some spare tippet in 3x-5x, you might need some 6x to fool the rainbows at the tail water.

Be sure to bring a selection of dry flies and emergers, including yellow sally patterns, green drake's, tan caddis, PMD's, and Mahogany mayflies. As far as nymphs goes Pheasant Tail's, small stonefly patters, and caddis larva and pupa are all producing.
